Balloon Gas is Helium (He)

Helium is an inert gas which means that it does not have a smell or colour and is not flammable.  It is also very light which is why we use it to inflate balloons so that they float.

Helium is found in the atmosphere all around us but the gas we use is extracted from the earth, however it is generally only extracted as a by-product of mining for other products such as oil.

You should never breathe in helium from a balloon as this can be very dangerous!
